The Maryknoll Society's first invitation, in 1946, was to evangelize two rural areas in Tanzania. As urbanization accelerated in Africa, Maryknoll responded to the new imperative of urban evangelization in the late 1960's.
Quickly, Maryknoll missioners built and staffed four parishes in Nairobi, Kenya. Recognizing other real and felt needs, Maryknoll personnel invested themselves in hospital ministry, university and seminary education.
In the 1990's, Kenya became a principle site for the overseas training of Maryknoll Brother candidates. As you will see on the web site, these Brothers are actively engaged in youth and medical ministries among the urban poor.
