Maryknoll Sisters were the first Maryknollers to work in Mwanza Diocese. They contributed for a good number of years in the 1970’s at Nyegezi Social Training Center (now St Augustine’s University) and at Bugando Medical Center. Maryknoll priests (some of them doctors) came to Bugando Medical Center starting in 1984 and other sisters and lay people followed. There are now two Maryknoll priests involved in apostolates in Mwanza Archdiocese.
