The Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America (commonly known as the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers) was first established by the Catholic bishops of the United States of America to be the missionary branch of the U.S. Church. In 1911, the Vatican assigned Maryknoll a mission territory in China. For the next thirty years, almost all Maryknollers served in China. The Maryknoll seminary building that also serves as the Society's headquarters in Ossining, New York, was fashioned with a Chinese motif. This is depicted in the upper portion of the Logo. In this tower, the bells would ring out - symbolically sending out the Word of God to the whole world (the lower portion of the Logo). |
