Annual Report of the Mission Awareness Committee (MAC) of the Religious Superiors' Association of Tanzania (RSAT) – June, 2004 to June, 2005 I. Growth of MAC as a Committee of RSAT In the past year we welcomed new representatives from the Spiritans -- East African Province and the Franciscan Conventuals. Father Nicodemus Hindoy, O.F.M. Cap became the new Coordinator of MAC on 1 January, 2005. We are deeply grateful to Father John Slinger, M.Afr., the outgoing Regional Superior of the Missionaries of Africa, for his wisdom and advice during these past three years as the Adviser/Contact person with RSAT. At the request of the RSAT leadership we have just compiled a three-page “Short History of the Mission Awareness Committee (MAC) of the Religious Superiors' Association of Tanzania (RSAT).” It traces the history of MAC from 1985 to 2005 and documents the close relationship and contact with the Tanzania Episcopal Conference from the beginning. II. Relationship with PMS on National and Diocesan Levels 1. MAC members are working closely with Father Liberatus Mwenda, the National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) in Tanzania. Father Jude Shayo, A.J., the Chairperson of MAC, and Father Joseph Healey, M.M., the Coordinator of MAC, were part of the PMS Tanzania delegation that participated in the 2004 PMS Kenya National Missionary Congress that took place in Nairobi, Kenya from 29 November to 4 December, 2004. The Chairperson of MAC participated in the PMS Tanzania National Meeting of Diocesan Directors at Kurasini Centre in Dar es Salaam from 1-2 April, 2005. The meeting was chaired by Bishop Augustine Shao, CSSp, Chairman of the Evangelisation Commission of TEC. 2. Father Mwenda has asked MAC members to assist the Diocesan Directors of PMS in different mission awareness projects and evangelization programmes. There is a close working relationship between PMS and MAC especially in the archdioceses of Dar es Salaam, Mwanza and Songea and in the dioceses of Iringa, Mbeya, Morogoro, and Zanzibar. MAC assisted PMS in the “Mbulu Diocesan Missionary Congress” from 6-14 November, 2004. A team of priests, sisters and lay people facilitated seminars, meetings, and activities on “Evangelizing Mission” and “Missionary Week.” Two radio programmes on the congress were produced in the Sisi Sote Ni Wamisionari series in February and March, 2005. 3. Mr. John Mbonde, a member of MAC, translated from English into Swahili the book Pamoja Kwa Yesu – Utoto wa Kimisionari for the PMS Tanzania National Office. Many MAC members energetically promote the activities of the Pontifical Society of the Holy Childhood throughout Tanzania. 4. MAC continues to assist PMS in circulating mission documents and materials especially by email, File Attachments and postings on websites such as the "Pope's 2005 Message for World Mission Sunday" in English and Swahili. III. Other New Developments, Activities, and Challenges 1. In this “Year of the Eucharist” that runs from October, 2004 to October, 2005 our monthly Swahili Radio programme, Sisi Sote Ni Wamisionari, on Radio Tumaini has the theme “Ekaristi na Umisionari” (“Eucharist and Mission”). A small committee chaired by Mr. Cletus Majani coordinates the programmes. The 6 June, 2005 radio programme was No. 123. The seminars and celebrations connected to World Mission Sunday on 24 October, 2004 and October, 2004 as “Missionary Month” highlighted this same “Eucharist” theme. 2. The National Coordinator of MAC visited Mwanza in November, 2004 and participated in a meeting of MAC Mwanza (that is active in producing mission-oriented radio program for Radio SAUT and Radio Cloud). Some of the funds originally given to the National MAC activities are now directly helping zones such as Mwanza. Members of MAC Dar es Salaam had their first formal meeting on 11 April, 2005. MAC Iringa remains very active. The other zones are growing more slowly. 3. A 34-minute Video Biography was produced on Father Joseph Healey called Walking with the Eastern Africa Church in Mission by Ukweli Video in Nairobi. The section on MAC includes interviews with Father Jude Shayo and Mrs. Esther Chilambo and singing by the Holy Childhood group in Kawe Parish. 4. An additional 100 MAC T Shirts in different colors with “MAC Tanzania” and a cross/globe on the front and the words “Sisi Sote Ni Wamisionari” on the back were made and are being distributed and sold to promote mission awareness. 200 white MAC caps with a similar design on the front were made and are being distributed and sold. 5. At the MAC National Meeting in Moshi from 10-11 May, 2005 a key distinction was made between: a. MAC-RSAT in the strict sense. Around 15 priests and brothers representing RSAT institutes. b. Participants in the bi-annual MAC Meetings. Between 30 and 40 people. c. The “Wider MAC” – the network of people interested in MAC and mission awareness that includes an extensive Email Mailing List and the use of the Internet. Over 135 people. The challenge is how to promote MAC on all three levels in close collaboration with the Local Church in Tanzania. IV. Financial Report I. Income A. Balance on 1 June, 2004 1,071,480/= Tz. Shs. B.
