Annual Report of the Mission Awareness Committee (MAC) of the Religious Superiors' Association of Tanzania (RSAT) - June, 2002 to June, 2003 I. Growth of MAC as a Committee of RSAT In the past year we were happy to welcome a first time representative from the Passionist Fathers and new representatives from the Spiritans -- East African Province, the Benedictines (Ndanda Abbey), and the Salvatorian Fathers and Brothers. We deeply thank Father William Dyer, MAfr for his help as the Adviser/Contact person with RSAT for the past two years. On 1 November, 2002 Father Jude Shayo, AJ, the Chairperson of Mission Awareness Committee (MAC), sent a letter (with accompanying Swahili leaflet on MAC) to the religious superiors of the 37 congregations and societies in RSAT. Four albums of photographs, symbols and text on the 1987-2003 history of MAC have been made. We welcome comments and suggestions on how to make MAC better known. Although MAC is a voluntary committee with voluntary contributions we are encouraged by the saying: "There is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer." II. Mission Awareness Seminars 1. Three members (Father Joseph Healey, MM, Father Baptiste Mapunda MAfr and John Mbonde) of our MAC Team gave a two day seminar on "Mission Awareness" during the "Inculturation Week" at the Salvatorian Institute of Philosophy and Theology in Morogoro, Tanzania on 17-18 March, 2003. The talks will be published in the report of the seminar in the institute's journal Sauti ya Mwokozi as: a. "Our Mission Identity: Basic Distinctions Between Charism, Mission/Evangelization/ Pastoral, Local Church and Inculturation in Africa." b. "The Impact of Communications Including African Oral Literature And Mass Media on Evangelisation (including small discussion groups on 'How to Use the Different Media of Communications for Evangelisation')." c. "Using Local Cultures as a Meeting Place of God and Human Beings." d. "Our Mission Commitment and Outreach: "Mission in the First Part of the 21st Century." As part of the "Inculturation Week"' Fathers Healey and Mapunda celebrated inculturated liturgies using various African and Indian symbols and gestures in the Formation Houses of the: Apostolic Life Community of Priests (ALCP) in the Work of the Holy Spirit - Opus Spiritus Sancti (OSS); Augustinians; Capuchins; Carmelites (OCD); Claretians; Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales; and Salvatorian Institute Compound (Salvatorians and Benedictines). 2. Full day Mission Awareness Seminar sponsored by the Tanzania Young Catholic Students (TYCS) in Dar es Salaam Archdiocese at the Don Bosco Centre, Upanga, Dar es Salaam on 23 February, 2003. 110 participants. The theme was "TYCS Leadership is Missionary Work." The main speaker was Moses Madembwe, the Chairperson of TYCS in Iringa Diocese. Based on the See, Judge and Act methodology there were small discussion groups on topics chosen by the youth themselves: "Personal Relationships," "Use of Free Time," "Corruption," "Generation Gap," and "Mission/Evangelization." The theme of the lively Eucharistic Celebration was "Healing and Reconciliation in the Ministry of TYCS Leaders" concluding with a "Sending Ceremony." 3. Half day Mission Awareness Seminar sponsored by the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) Office of Morogoro Diocese in Morogoro on 19 March, 2003. 90 participants. There were talks on "PMS," "MAC," "The Role of Religious in Mission Awareness," and "The Role of Lay People in Mission Awareness." The discussion focused on getting mission awareness down to the grassroots in the diocese. III. Relationship with PMS on National and Diocesan Levels 1. MAC members are working closely with Father Liberatus Mwenda, the National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) in Tanzania. The Coordinator of MAC and six MAC members participated in the National Meeting of PMS Diocesan Directors at Kurasini Centre in Dar es Salaam from 24 to 28 February, 2003. It was chaired by Bishop Augustine Shao, CSSp, Chairman of the Mission Commission of TEC. 2. In the past year three institutes in RSAT (Maryknoll Society, Pallotines, and Salvatorian Fathers and Brothers) made donations to the National Office of PMS. 3. Father Mwenda has asked MAC members to assist the Diocesan Directors of PMS in different mission awareness projects and evangelization programmes. There is a close working relationship between PMS and MAC especially in the archdioceses of Dar es Salaam and Mwanza and the dioceses of Zanzibar, Morogoro, Iringa and Mbeya. Sister Adelina Mtuka, SOLQA represented MAC at the PMS Western Zone Seminar in Tabora from 21-23 August, 2002 and Perpetua Mashelle represented MAC at the PMS Eastern Zone Seminar in Dar es Salaam from 9-12 September, 2002. After the seminar mentioned in II. 3. above, a new branch -- MAC Morogoro -- began as an "action committee" within the structure of the Morogoro Diocese PMS Office. IV. Other New Developments, Activities and Challenges 1. We value our close-working relationship with the Tanzania Catholic Association of Sisters (TCAS), formerly RWSAT, including making an hour-long presentation at its annual meeting in June, 2003, collaborating with TCAS zonal representatives, and welcoming an increasing number of Sisters at our bi-annual meetings. On 25 November, 2002 the Chairperson of MAC sent a letter (with accompanying Swahili leaflet on MAC) to the religious superiors of the 88 congregations and institutes in TCAS. 2. Our bi-annual meetings included talks on the history of missionary activity in Tanzania. During a field trip to Bagamoyo in November, 2002 Samahani Kejeli, curator of the Museum at Bagamoyo Catholic Parish vividly explained the history of the first missionaries in Tanzania - the Holy Ghost Fathers (now called Spiritans) who arrived in Bagamoyo in 1868. Before our tour of the compound of the Benedictine Abbey in Ndanda in April, 2003 the retired Abbot Siegfried Hertlein, OSB gave an enlightening talk on the history of the Benedictines' missionary work in Southern Tanzania. 3. By June, 2003 our monthly, one-half hour Swahili radio programme on Radio Tumaini called Sisi Sote Ni Wamisionari reached No. 97 since beginning in March, 1995. No. 96 (5 May, 2003) was on "Wamisionari Watanzania Nchini Chile." Father Chesco Msaga, CPPS interviewed three Tanzanian deacons of the Society of the Precious Blood studying at the Salvatorian Institute in Morogoro who went to Chile in December, 2001 as the first African missionaries of their society. The deacons also described their missionary experiences during the seminar mentioned above in II. 1. This and other examples of African missionaries going to other African countries and other continents are described in an article "Called and Sent: The African Church in Mission" to be published in the November--December, 2003 issue of New People Magazine. A Swahili version will be published in the September-October, 2003 issue of Enendeni Magazine. Copies of some Sisi Sote Ni Wamisionari programmes have been shared with Radio SAUT (Nyegezi), Radio Faraja (Shinyanga), Radio Mwangaza (Dodoma), and Lwanga Communications (Mombasa). 4. Five MAC members are preparing a one hour panel discussion in Swahili on "The Year of the Rosary" under the coordination of Father Paul Haule, the Coordinator of Radio and TV for the Tanzania Episcopal Conference, to be broadcast on Radio Tanzania. 5. MAC continues to help coordinate four 50-minute video productions a year by Video Tumaini that are broadcast on the Swahili programme Amani Kwenu on CTN (Coastal Television Network). On World Mission Sunday, 20 October, 2002 there was a panel discussion on the theme "Mission is Proclamation of Forgiveness." On 18 May, 2003 Esther Chilambo interviewed Father Baptiste Mapunda, MAfr and Sister Juliana Karomba, MSOLA on the theme "Tanzanian Missionaries Go to Zambia." 6. MAC is working closely with the editors of the different Swahili missionary magazines in Tanzania. The new leaflet ("kitini") of MAC will be distributed as an insert in the September-October, 2003 issue of Enendeni published by the Consolata Missionaries. 7. Two continental meetings are being planned by the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples (CEP) on the theme "Formation for Mission" to take place in English-speaking and French-speaking Africa in 2004. MAC answered a questionnaire sent by Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe through Archbishop Luigi Pezzuto, the Apostolic Nuncio. Hopefully these meetings will bring us a step closer to having our First African Missionary Congress. Through a general benefactor the chairperson of MAC will participate in the 2nd American Missionary Congress (known as CAM2) and the 7th Latin American Missionary Congress (known as COMLA7) to take place in Guatemala City, Guatemala from 19-30 November, 2003. We count on the generosity of RSAT members to make financial contributions for the ongoing and new activities and projects of MAC especially in the 2004 Calendar Year. Any other comments and suggestions are most welcome. Mission Awareness Committee (MAC) - Kamati ya Kuhamasisha Roho ya Umisionari RSAT P.O. 5124 Dar es Salaam, Tanzania 25 June, 2003 4
